Intercollegiate athletics are guided by organizations that set rules, determine eligibility, and run national championships for college sports. The NCAA does this for a large number of colleges and universities across multiple divisions, coordinating how student-athletes compete, what counts as amateur status, and how postseason tournaments are organized. That broad governance and widespread membership make it the largest authority overseeing college athletics in the United States.

In contrast, the NBA and NFL are professional leagues with players who are paid to play, outside the college system. The IOC governs the Olympic Games on an international level and doesn’t oversee or regulate college competition or eligibility. So the NCAA stands as the primary governing body for intercollegiate athletics.
